Ryan Confirms Rubick Will Not Return in 2014 San Domenico

August 4th, 2014

Initially touted for a return to racing in the Group 3 event at Rosehill Gardens on August 16th, trainer Gerald Ryan has revealed boom colt Rubick will briefly return to the spelling paddock rather than contest the 2014 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) after being struck down with a virus.

Completing a track gallop last Tuesday morning, Ryan said the Encosta De Lago colt appeared fine prior to the run, however returned with a notable increase in temperature.

Eyeing the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1600m) as the major target for the three-year-old through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Ryan said that while un-ideal, Rubick should still have enough time to return to racing and find peak condition ahead of the November 1st event.

“Rubick had a temperature after he galloped on Tuesday morning so we are just going to pull up stumps for now,” Ryan told The Daily Telegraph.

“He was going to resume in the San Domenico Stakes but I won’t push him early in the Spring Carnival.

“I don’t want to crucify the horse so we will give him a break. We still have time to get him ready for the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington in November.”

Appearing fine at first glance, Ryan said all signs point towards a minor ailment and revealed several of his three-year-olds have been affected, including filly Lucky Raquie.

“There are no symptoms, his blood is fine. But you can’t run him, he is too valuable to risk,” Ryan added.

“It is not just Rubick, either. Lucky Raquie has it too, so she is out.”

Debuting with an impressive turn of foot to comfortably win the TAB Iphone App Plate (1000m) by close to three lengths on January 25th, Rubick stamped his claims as one to watch when repeating the dose in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude C&G (1100m) on February 8th, but was unable to handle the late pace and fourth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1400m), immediately returning to the paddock.
