Ygritte Likely to Resume in 2014 San Domenico Stakes

August 7th, 2014

A standout performer over four starts through her maiden racing preparation in autumn, trainer Gerald Ryan is confident of an even greater campaign from talented three-year-old Ygritte through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Yet to finish worse than second, Ygritte was heavily back in the days leading up to the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) on April 19th, and while appearing to have sewn up a maiden victory at rated level, tired late to finish half a length behind Eloping.

Reportedly taking well to her time in the paddock and return to work, Ryan said he is confident of another impressive preparation from the Snitzel filly this time in, outlining the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 16th as the likely first point of call.

“She has come up terrific and she will be entered in the San Domenico and the Silver Shadow,” Ryan told Racing Ahead.

“She is going really good and has made massive improvement from the autumn.

“She gets into the fillies races quiet well because she has only won her maiden and she doesn’t cop a penalty, but she ran second to Mossfun and ran second up the straight at Flemington to David Hayes’ filly (Clifton Red) and then she came back and ran to Peter Morgan’s filly (Eloping) at Randwick.

“She is a lot stronger, probably sixty kilos heavier and she appears to be coming up really good.”

Debuting with an impressive two lengths victory over classy competition in the Facebook Friends Race Day Maiden (1000m) on February 1st, Ygritte finished second to subsequent Golden Slipper champion Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on February 15th before again finishing a close second to Clifton Red in the Group 3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) on March 8th.

While yet to be confirmed for a path beyond the San Domenico Stakes, Ygritte appeared in nominations for both the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Caulfield Classic (2000m), released on Tuesday.
