Law Leads 2014 San Domenico Stakes Field

August 13th, 2014

Sydney’s four-time premiership winning trainer Chris Waller will give new stable acquisition Law their first run under his care this Saturday with the Golden Rose hope heading the San Domenico Stakes 2014 field.

Running as Rosehill Gardens Race 5 at 3:00pm this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Smithfield RSL Club San Domenico Stakes (1100m) has attracted a final field of nine three-year-olds.

Many of the acceptors are kicking off their Sydney Spring Racing Carnival campaigns and are heading towards a run in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at the track on September 13.

One of those, and a $51 roughie in the futures Golden Rose odds at, is the former Gai Waterhouse-trained Law.

Now with Waller the Denman colt races for the first time since a Heavy track saw them fail as an $81 outsider in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on April 5.

Winner of the Listed NSW Breeders’ Plate (1000m) on debut last October, Law has had three trials leading up to their return all at Rosehill and will be ridden quietly by Glyn Schofield to try and get them to settle ahead of their step up to 1400m in the Rose.

Shortest priced of the San Domenico Stakes hopefuls in Golden Rose betting meanwhile is the Gerald Ryan-trained Ygritte ($34).

The Snitzel filly has a gun barrier three draw for her first-up run on the weekend where she will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.

After a win on debut back in February Ygritte went on to run second in three Group 3 autumn assignments, the form of which has stacked up as she was runner-up to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Mossfun in the Widden Stakes.

Ryan has a strong hand in Saturday’s race too having also accepted for the lightly raced Washington Heights who gets the rails run for their second career start.

The Commands colt ran second on debut back in April relishing a rain-affected track at Randwick in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) that they will be looking to go one better than here.

Also with two chances in the San Domenico Stakes this year are Team Hawkes with Blue Diamond Stakes seventh placed Nostradamus (barrier 4) resuming and Bugatty drawn one outside of them.

Waterhouse is then the third stable with double representation in the race having accepted with both her Todman Stakes fourth placegetter Windjina who has the outside barrier nine draw to overcome and Hampton Court in barrier six.

The David Payne-trained Bold Circle ($41) meanwhile is the best fancied of the field in futures Golden Rose odds, the son of Bernardini on the short back-up after running last in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) behind Scissor Kick last weekend at Randwick.
