Nostradamus has justified his favouritism to win the 2014 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill Gardens today.

Trained by Team Hawkes, Nostradamus had a terrific jump from the gates and jockey James McDonald settled the three-year-old Medaglia d’Oro (USA) colt in a great position.

Coming into the straight Sheer Style surged to the lead but could not hold off Nostradamus who took the lead with 250m to go and won by almost a length from a strong Washington Heights and Law in third. Sheer Style faded to finish last.

“He probably actually began too good because the idea was just to jump and have him just behind the speed,” Michael Hawkes said.

“He was anyway, but he was a bit fresh today but James got him nice and balanced and he hit the line strong.

“He has done everything right and he will keep improving.”

Nostradamus has been included in nominations for two spring Group 1 features, the Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 13 and the Caulfield Guineas on October 11.
