Waller Pleased with 2015 San Domenico Chance Japonisme

August 10th, 2015

Trainer Chris Waller is wary of the talent-rich field nominated for Saturday’s Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Royal Randwick, but is confident classy three-year-old Japonisme is more than capable of a competitive performance.

While yet to contest a black type event, Japonisme has more than stamped his claims as one to watch this time in returning for successes in each of the TAB Rewards Maiden Handicap (1200m), Bob Ingham Handicap (1100m) and Tradie Magazine BM72 (1100m) since July 8th.

Underlining Golden Slipper winner Vancouver as the clear threat, Waller told The Daily Telegraph he is pleased with the condition of the three-year-old and is confident of a competitive performance in the 2015 San Domenico Stakes.

“We have to run into Vancouver now so it might stop his winning streak,” Waller said.

“But Japonisme is a fit horse and deserves to be there.”

A particularly impressive list of ten horses were included in 2015 San Domenico Stakes nominations on Monday, including the Gerald Ryan-trained King’s Troop.

King’s Troop will carry winning form into the 2015 San Domenico Stakes and Ryan is confident the condition will count for a lot in what is undoubtedly his biggest task to date on Saturday.

“He has come through the Warwick Farm win terrific and he will be entered for the Saner Domenico,” Ryan said.

“I will also look at the Vain Stakes in Melbourne and see which race suits him better.

“He ran a fast time the other day and the form around him is really stacking up. He’s a talented colt.”

Headwater has not been seen at the races since finishing a credible fifth in the Golden Slipper on March 21st but co-trainer Michael Hawkes believes the horse is in the right form for a return in the 2015 San Domenico Stakes.

“He had a nice trial last week and we are happy with him,” Hawkes said.

“The plan at this stage is to run.”

The 2015 San Domenico Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
