Classy Chris Waller runner Japonisme has posted a career highlighted at Rosehill Gardens over the weekend; producing a monumental turn of foot to take out the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) ahead of a talented field.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Tye Angland settled Japonisme in primed position on the heels of the race’s early leaders, who set a fair tempo away from the barriers and approaching the bend.

Rounding onto the final straight with plenty to do, the Choisir gelding immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by Angland; producing an impressive kick to pull clear and hit the line half a length ahead of King’s Troop; Godolphin runner Haptic boxing on for a brave third.

Waller was understandably thrilled with Japonisme’s performance for success in the 2015 San Domenico Stakes and confirmed the horse will progress towards the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) in early September.

“We’ve got a pretty handy horse on our hands,” Waller said after the race.

“I said if he wins today I think we’ve got a Group 1 horse on our hands.

“He’s still got a bit of maturing to do … it is exciting.

“He actually looks better today than last start so that’s a good thing going forward if we did want to give him another run or two.

“The Golden Rose is a hard race to bypass, it’s in our backyard.

“They (connections) would prefer to have a go…they’ll be telling me what to do.”

Waller believes the conditions of the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 7th may also play into the strengths of Japonisme, and will consider a freshen-up and campaign towards that target following the Golden Rose.

“I think he’s a good sprinter,” he said.

“The 1400m is not really a good sprint, it’s more like a mile for a three-year-old but it is hard to bypass.

“The Coolmore, if you back off now, you could easily get (him) ready for a race like that.”

Punters who backed Japonisme to win the 2015 San Domenico Stakes with Ladbrokes.com.au have been paid out on generous $4.40 odds for success!
