Star Turn Primed for 2016 San Domenico Stakes

August 11th, 2016

Team Hawkes are thrilled with the condition of Star Turn and are confident the three-year-old has what it takes to upset race favourite Capitalist, when he returns to racing in Saturday’s 2016 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Star Turn has been a strong and consistent performer through his short racing career since debuting last spring, but has not been seen at the races since he finished a credible sixth in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 19th; three-and-half lengths off the pace of Capitalist.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes told AAP that the Star Witness colt has taken plenty of benefit and condition from his time away from racing, and said the way the horse jumps will dictate where he is ridden in transit in the San Domenico Stakes 2016.

“He’s grown up a lot more and he’s probably a lot more mentally mature this time around,” Hawkes said.

“We’ve obviously improved – as Capitalist no doubt has as well – so it’s going to be a good race.

“He’s always had the ability. He’s run in the Diamond and a Slipper. You don’t run in those races unless you’ve got above average ability.

“How he jumps is how we’ll ride him.

“Smaller fields do become a bit more tactical but obviously Capitalist is the horse to beat.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Star Turn immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow with a credible performance for third in the Kirkham Plate (1000m) before posting his only race win to date in the Pierro Plate (1100m) a fortnight later.

Beating a number of notable opponents to the lien in a strong Warwick Farm trial on January 25th, the colt out of Golden Delicious ran second in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude C&G (1100m) first-up this year; progressing to fifth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in what was his only other start prior to the Golden Slipper.

Star Turn has been confirmed to be partnered by in-form hoop Tommy Berry in the San Domenico Stakes, and will leave from barrier 6.
